Papers Please, the dystopian document thriller developed by Lucas Pope, has been given a release date of the 8th of August. It will be available through Steam, Good Old Games, the Humble store (home of the various humble bundles which is worth checking out on it’s own) and directly from the Papers Please website.

Papers Please is set in the fictional eastern European country of Arstotzka, which has just ended a 6 year war with it’s neighbour and re-opened an economically vital border town. The lucky player wins the Labour Lottery and you’re sent to fill the role of a border official. You’re tasked with allowing immigrants into the country, following strict rules and constantly changing regulations. Amidst the throngs of genuine economic migrants and tourists you’re faced with spies, terrorists, criminals as well as genuine refugee seekers who don’t always have the correct paper work.

Using the increasingly complex tools and information given to you, the player has to decided who gets to enter and who gets to leave. It’s a compelling quasi-puzzle game with the complexity of the rules and regulations taking up your valuable time. You only have the duration of the working day to process as many travellers as you can, and you’re paid per person. You also have a family to care for, to buy food and medicine for, provide warmth and shelter for. You’re heavily penalised for each mistake you make and it can literally mean life or death for your family members.

The art style of the game really suits the overall oppressive tone of the narrative too. Overall It’s a very imaginative game, with a lot of potential, and well worth checking out the beta which is still available here

Check out the official website and the Steam Greenlight page and don’t forget to watch the trailer below.
