Ridge Racer Driftopia, the franchise’s first foray into free-to-play, is entering open beta starting today on Steam.

To take part in the closed Beta all you need to do is visit the Ridge Racer Driftopia website: www.ridgeracerdriftopia.com

As mentioned above Driftopia is the first Ridge Racer to enter into the free-to-play market and it promises to put “drifting and arcade handling right at the heart of the experience”.  Ridge Racer Driftopia is being developed by Finlands own Bugbear Entertainment, the studio behind the 2012 Ridge Racer Unbounded, the hilariously fun (IMO) FlatOut series as well as a number of other racing titles. As you would expect with a free-to-play game, it only has the core modes of the game, it has however received a visual upgrade and keeps the core drive fast/drift/destroy things. Online leaderboards are included and players will also be able to level up cars and earn booster cards to give them the extra edge to climb the leaderboards.

Ridge Racer Unbounded, the previous release in the series also developed by Bugbear, was received reasonably well ratings around about 70-75% on average. Bugbear has a good pedigree with non-sim style racing games. The first two entries in the FlatOut series were crazy good fun and the series only started to lose appeal after Bugbear no longer developed it.

There isn’t a confirmed release date for Ridge Racer Driftopia as yet, though it is scheduled for release this year. Going into a public, albeit closed, beta should mean that a release date shouldn’t be too far in the future.
